Gentle Touch® Infant Massage Video

Press Release

Imagine stress management for infants! Babies do experience emotional and physical tension. Massage is proving an excellent way to release tension, and promote deep relaxation. This means that babies fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and sleep deeper. This is good news for parents who appreciate the extra rest, and having a baby with a calmer disposition.

The newly released, medically endorsed Gentle Touch® Infant Massage Video explains the many benefits of massage as an ancient, yet scientifically proven, parenting tool. A variety of pediatric, therapeutic, and developmental specialists discuss the health, growth, developmental, and social-emotional implications for the child, the parents, and the family. The video is hosted by Dr. Olson Huff, retired pediatrician, and includes Dr. Saul Schanburg, noted touch researcher who was recently featured in Newsweek's special issue on children and brain development (Spring/Summer, 1997).

The Gentle Touch® Infant Massage Video is unique in its approach. Parents (including a father) demonstrate and explain easy to learn massage strokes with their infants who vary in age. After viewing excellent role models, a parent feels greater confidence. The routines are developmentally sensitive and progress as both the child and parent are ready.

Honoring infants as worthy of respect and tenderness, parents in the Gentle Touch® Infant Massage Video ask their child's permission prior to touch. Viewers learn non-verbal communication and what "yes" and "no" looks like. Sections also include soothing techniques and everything a parent needs to know in terms of doing the massage comfortably and safely. Lastly, information on babies who are premature, "unsettled", or have other special needs is presented.

This beautifully filmed, 47 minute Gentle Touch® Infant Massage Video is written and produced by an Infant Specialist/ Certified Infant Massage Instructor and a Pediatrician. It contains nurturing scenes of parents singing, saying nursery rhymes, and notes ways to integrate appropriate touch into caregiving. A wonderful gift for new parents, it shows touch and massage as a powerful language of love and as a parenting tradition. The National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse includes this video on their resource sheet.

Pricing for widespread distribution to parents is suggested.
