Related Biographies
Emma Miller, D.Div., created the Gentle Touch® Parent-Child
Program in 1993. She is an international trainer, program consultant,
speaker, and author of articles in professional, parenting, and massage
publications. She holds certifications as an
Infant/Toddler/Family Specialist, Infant Massage Instructor, Nursing Child Assessment
Satellite Training Instructor, and in Pre- and Perinatal
Massage, and is an Interfaith Minister. Her goal is to
promote the self-efficacy of the child, nurturing parenting, strong family
life, and a responsive system of care. Thus her focus
is on partnering with vulnerable populations, prenatal and infant mental health, and
family-centered practices.
Andrea Russon
Gravatt, M.D., F.A.A.P., received her degree from the University of
Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and completed her residency at Duke University Medical Center. Since 1982, she has been a pediatrician in private
practice in Asheville, N.C. She is a
national speaker, and author of articles in medical journals, parenting
magazines, two children's books, and an audiotape. Specializing
in child abuse prevention, child safety, and injury prevention, she is the
founder and medical director of the Western N.C. Regional Child Abuse Center. She has been awarded numerous
honors for her medical, child advocacy, and community service efforts.
Olson Huff, M.D., F.A.A.P.,
retired pediatrician in Asheville, N.C.
Saul M. Schanberg,
M.D., Ph.D., received his degrees at Yale University. Since 1967, he has been in research at Duke University Medical Center, and since, 1984, has been Professor of Pharmacology
and Biological Psychiatry. His work in the
neurosciences has been recognized through honors, awards and grants. Participating with numerous national organizations, he has
devoted his recent years to the study of touch. The
advances he has made in this field have been widely published in a spectrum of
medical journals. He is recognized
as a leading authority in infant massage.
William Lord Coleman, M.D.,
received his degree from the University of New Mexico, and completed his internship and residency at Duke Medical Center, N.C., and a fellowship in behavioral- developmental and
general pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital. A
former faculty member at Harvard Medical School, he is currently a pediatrician
and the Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics and
the Center for Development and Learning at the University of N.C. School of
Medicine. He is the chair of the Developmental and
Behavioral Pediatrics of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and is a member of the Executive
Council of the Society of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. He is a national lecturer, author of numerous scholarly
works, and a researcher.
